Etymology

أَمْهَل is the Form IV causative verb built on the triliteral root م-ه-ل, which carries the sense of slowness and unhurried ease. The base noun مَهْل means leisure or a slow pace, as in على مَهْل, at one's ease. The causative shifts that idea outward: to grant another person that slowness, that is, to give them time. The word is native Semitic Arabic with no Indo-European origin.
