The word comes from the Arabic root sh-b-h (ش ب ه), which carries the sense of resemblance and likeness. From it Arabic builds the Form VIII verb اشْتَبَهَ, to be doubtful or to suspect, because things that look alike breed confusion and doubt. مُشْتَبَه is the passive participle of that verb, literally something held in suspicion or made doubtful.
