Etymology

تُجاه comes from the triliteral root و-ج-ه, which carries the sense of face and direction. The same root gives وَجْه (face), جِهة (direction), and واجَهَ (to face). As a locative form it named the place one faces, and from there it came to mark the direction or object toward which something is aimed. Today it works mainly as a preposition for stance, duty, and feeling toward a thing.
