Etymology
The word comes from the Arabic root f-ḍ-w, which carries the sense of emptiness and openness. The verb faḍā meant to be wide, vacant, or unobstructed. From this came faḍāʾ, a name for any open expanse. In modern usage it became the standard term for outer space.
