Etymology
سِعْر comes from the Semitic root س-ع-ر (s-ʿ-r), tied to setting a value or rate. The same root carries an older sense of kindling fire and frenzy, seen in سُعار, rabies. Arabic kept the commercial sense for its everyday word for price. Modern Hebrew שַׁעַר (shaʿar) shows the same root used for an exchange rate.
