Etymology
Arabic ruzz is a loanword, not a native Semitic root. It belongs to the same ancient trade word for rice that gave Greek óryza and, through Latin, English rice. Rice cultivation spread west from South and Southeast Asia, and the word for it traveled along the same routes, passing through Persian and Aramaic before settling in Arabic. Scholars still debate the exact chain of borrowing, but the family resemblance across languages tracks the spread of the crop itself.
