Etymology

The verb comes from the Semitic root و-د-ي (w-d-y), whose core sense is something flowing outward. In early Arabia this sense narrowed to the flow of payment: a killer's kin handing compensation to a victim's kin. The related noun دِية (diya) names that payment itself, and the same root gives وَادٍ (wadi), a valley where water flows. Islamic law kept وَدَى as the fixed legal verb for paying blood money after an unintentional killing.
