Etymology
The verb comes from the Arabic triliteral root س و د (s-w-d), which carries the sense of mastery and pre-eminence. The same root gives سيّد, meaning master or lord, and سيادة, meaning sovereignty. It is a hollow verb, with a weak middle radical that drops in some forms.
