Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root sh-r-ṭ, which carries the sense of marking, incising, and stipulating. In early Islamic usage the shurṭa was a select body of guards, set apart by distinguishing marks or signs. From that designated corps the word settled into its modern meaning of the police force.
