Etymology

بَحَث comes from the Semitic triconsonantal root ب-ح-ث (b-ḥ-th). The oldest concrete sense in the classical dictionaries is to dig or scratch at the ground to find something, the way an animal turns over the earth. From that physical act the meaning widened to searching for an object and then to scholarly inquiry and discussion.
