صائِب comes from the triliteral root ص-و-ب (ṣ-w-b), whose core sense is hitting a target or landing on the right course. The root gives the verb أصاب, meaning to hit the mark or to be right. صائِب is the active participle: literally one who or what hits the mark, hence correct or on target when applied to an opinion, decision, or guess.
