Etymology
حَرَق comes from the triliteral Semitic root ح-ر-ق (H-R-Q), which carries the core idea of burning or scorching across its verb forms. حَرَقَ is the basic Form I (faʿala) shape, the plainest way to say that someone burned something. A related Form IV, أَحْرَقَ, exists with roughly the same causative sense and is common in formal Arabic, while colloquial dialects lean on the Form I verb shown here.
