Etymology
Ishʿāl is the verbal noun of the Form IV Arabic verb ashʿala, meaning to ignite or kindle. It comes from the triliteral Semitic root sh-ʿ-l, tied to burning and flaming, seen also in shuʿla (flame) and ishtaʿala (to catch fire). Arabic is a Semitic language, not Indo-European, so it has no Proto-Indo-European root.
