Etymology

The root ج-د-ل carries the base sense of twisting or plaiting, as in braiding a rope. Arabic extended this physically to a verbal meaning: twisting words back and forth, that is, arguing. تَجادَل is built on the Form VI pattern تَفاعَلَ, which adds reciprocity to a root, so it means to argue with one another rather than simply to argue.
