Etymology
فائِت is the active participle of the hollow verb فاتَ, يَفوتُ, built on the root ف-و-ت, which carries the sense of passing by, elapsing, or slipping away unmissed. As a participle it describes something that has already gone by, so it is used for 'last' or 'past' time periods and for chances that have slipped away. Arabic is a Semitic language, so this word has no Indo-European root or cognates.
