Etymology

The root ف-س-ق (f-s-q) first described a date slipping out of its skin, an image of something bursting free of its proper covering. Classical Arabic dictionaries extended this to a person who breaks out of the bounds set by religious law or accepted morality. فاسِق is the active participle of this root, so it names someone who has stepped outside the right path, a sinner or transgressor. The word occurs often in the Quran to mark those who openly violate divine command.
