Etymology

قِراءَة is a verbal noun from the verb قَرَأَ (qaraʔa), to read or recite, built on the maṣdar pattern fiʿāla. It comes from the common Semitic root q-r-ʔ, which carries the senses of calling out and reading aloud. The same root gives قُرآن (Qurʼān), literally the recitation. The link to reading aloud reflects a culture where texts were long transmitted by voice.
