Etymology

مُمَيَّز is the passive participle of the Form II verb مَيَّزَ, 'to distinguish.' That verb is built on the Arabic root م-ي-ز, which carries the sense of separating or sorting one thing from another. The participle therefore names something that has been set apart, and so marked, distinctive, or special. The root is Semitic and has no Indo-European source.
