Etymology
The root ق ي س (q-y-s) carries the idea of measuring, comparing, and reasoning by analogy. From it comes قياس (qiyās), meaning measurement or analogy, a term central to both Arabic grammar and Islamic legal reasoning. قياسي adds the nisba suffix -iyy, meaning relating to measurement or to an established standard. This is why it can describe a grammatical form that follows the regular pattern, or a record that sets a new measure of achievement.
