Etymology
The word comes from the Arabic root ر-ه-ب (r-h-b), tied to the verb rahiba, meaning to fear, dread, or stand in awe of something. From this root Arabic formed rāhib, the active participle meaning one who fears God, which came to denote a Christian monk or hermit devoted to ascetic worship. Rāhibah is simply the feminine form, marked by the added tā' marbūta ending, and refers to a nun. The Quran already uses the plural ruhbān for Christian monks, showing the term was established in Arabic well before the modern period.
