Etymology
The word comes from the Arabic root m-j-n, whose verb majana means to be brazen or to jest without restraint, and whose noun mujūn means ribald jesting or frivolity. Classical Arabic lexicographers link the adverb majjānan, gratis, to this same root: giving something without asking a price was pictured as a careless, unserious act, closer to jest than to formal exchange. Over time majjānan settled into ordinary commercial speech and lost any playful connotation, simply meaning free of charge.
