Etymology

مُحَطِّم comes from the Arabic triliteral root ح ط م (ḥ-ṭ-m), which carries the sense of breaking or smashing something into pieces. The word is the active participle of the Form II verb حَطَّمَ (ḥaṭṭama), 'to smash' or 'shatter', built by doubling the middle root letter to intensify the plain action of breaking. Adding the participle prefix مُ- turns the verb into an agent noun: 'one that smashes'. The same root also gives حُطَام (wreckage) and تَحْطِيم (destruction).
