Etymology
تيار comes from the Arabic root ت-و-ر, tied to the verb تار (yatūru), meaning to go around or circulate. The medial waw shifts to ya in this pattern, a common change in hollow roots, giving the form تيار. The word first described physical flow, water or air moving in one direction, and later extended to electricity and, figuratively, to movements of opinion.
