Etymology
The word is the verbal noun of the Form III verb قابَلَ, "to meet face to face." It comes from the triliteral root ق-ب-ل, which carries the sense of facing, being in front, and accepting. The Form III pattern mufāʿala adds the idea of doing something reciprocally, so the noun names a mutual facing: a meeting or interview where two sides confront each other.
