Etymology
مُقِيم is the active participle of the Form IV verb أَقَامَ (ʼaqāma), meaning to make something stand, to establish, or to reside. Both verb and participle come from the triliteral Semitic root ق-و-م (q-w-m), whose core sense is to stand or rise. The idea of standing firm in a place shifted over time to the settled sense of residing or dwelling somewhere.
