Αυτοκρατορία is built on αυτοκράτωρ, the Greek word for emperor, with the abstract noun suffix -ία attached to name the emperor's domain. Αυτοκράτωρ itself joins αυτός, meaning self, with κράτος, meaning power or rule, so the emperor is literally one who rules by his own power, not as a delegate. The word entered wide use for the Roman and later Byzantine state and still names any empire today.
