Etymology
Greek borrowed "ζόμπι" directly from English "zombie" in the 20th century, as horror films popularized the figure worldwide. English in turn took the word from Haitian Creole "zonbi", which traces back to West and Central African languages, possibly Kikongo "nzambi" (god or spirit). The Greek spelling simply adapts the English pronunciation to Greek letters. As a recent loanword, it has no Indo-European root of its own.
