Etymology
Ξεπεράσει is a form of ξεπερνώ, built from the prefix ξε- (a worn-down form of εκ-, "out of") attached to περνώ, "to pass." The root of περνώ goes back to Ancient Greek πέρα, "beyond," from the Proto-Indo-European root *per-, "to lead or pass through." The same root gave English "fare" and "ford," and Latin "portus" (harbor), the source of English "port." So the verb literally means "to pass beyond," a sense that widened to cover overcoming obstacles or exceeding limits.
