Etymology
Greek γκάζι is a modern loanword, taken from Italian gas or French gaz. Those words trace back to a term coined in the 17th century by the Flemish chemist Jan Baptist van Helmont, who based it on the Greek word chaos. The word later returned to Greek in its European form, first meaning the fuel gas itself, then extending to the accelerator pedal that controls fuel flow to an engine.
