Etymology

Δέλτα is the Greek name for the fourth letter of the alphabet, Δ. Greek borrowed both the letter and its name from the Phoenician letter daleth, whose shape and name meant door. The triangular shape of the capital letter later gave English and other languages the geographic term delta for a triangular deposit of silt at a river mouth, first applied by ancient Greek writers to the Nile.
