Etymology
The word was coined in the late nineteenth century from the Greek roots κίνημα (movement) and γράφω (to write or record), mirroring the French cinématographe, the name given to the Lumière brothers' projection device. Greek borrowed the international scientific compound back into its own vocabulary, since the coinage itself had drawn on Greek roots in the first place. The result literally means writing or recording of movement.
