Etymology

Ηλικιωμένος is the passive participle of the verb ηλικιώνομαι, which is built on ηλικία, meaning age or stage of life. Ηλικία itself goes back to Ancient Greek ἡλικία, derived from ἧλιξ, a term for someone of the same age or generation. The word therefore literally describes someone who has advanced in age, and over time it settled into its modern sense of an elderly person.
