Etymology
γυμνός continues Ancient Greek γυμνός, the Greek reflex of the Proto-Indo-European word for 'naked'. The form is phonetically irregular — the expected Greek outcome would have begun with a nasal — and the initial γ is generally explained by dissimilation or metathesis of the original cluster. The same root underlies the combining form 'gymno-' and, via γυμνάζω ('to train, originally while naked'), the words gymnasium and gymnastics.
