Etymology
A 19th-century scientific coinage borrowed into Greek from French 'oxygène', the term created by Lavoisier. It was assembled from Greek elements ὀξύς ('sharp, sour, acid') and the -γενής / -γον- root ('producing, forming'), so it literally means 'acid-former' — reflecting the old belief that oxygen was the essential component of all acids. Modern Greek thus re-imported a word built from its own ancient roots.
