Etymology

Εξέγερση is a deverbal noun built from εξεγείρομαι, 'to rise up, rebel'. That verb combines the prefix εξ- ('out') with εγείρω, 'to wake, rouse, raise'. Εγείρω descends from the PIE root *h1ger-, 'to wake, rouse', the same root behind the Sanskrit verb jāgarti, 'is awake'. The suffix -ση turns the verb into an abstract noun of action, so the word literally names the act of rousing oneself up.
