Etymology
Modern Greek φίλτρο carries two histories that happen to look identical. Its everyday sense, filter, is a later borrowing that reached Greek through Italian filtro and French filtre, both from Medieval Latin filtrum, a piece of felt used for straining liquids. Its older sense, love potion, comes from ancient Greek φίλτρον, built from φιλεῖν, to love, plus the instrumental suffix -τρον, roughly meaning instrument of love. The two words converged in spelling once Greek adopted the loanword, so one form now serves both a coffee machine and a witch's cauldron.
