Etymology

Μαγνητικός is built on μαγνήτης, the Greek word for magnet, with the adjectival suffix -ικός added to mean pertaining to. Μαγνήτης itself goes back to ancient references to the Μαγνήτης λίθος, the Magnesian stone, named after Magnesia, a region in Thessaly and also in Asia Minor where magnetite ore was found. The word passed into Latin as magneticus and from there into most European languages.
