Etymology
The word combines the adverb ξανά, meaning again, with πάρω, the dependent (subjunctive/future) stem of παίρνω, meaning to take. Ξανά itself comes from a fusion of the ancient prefixes εκ and ανά, roughly out and up again. The exact ancient source of παίρνω is debated among Greek etymologists, so no single unbroken derivation is settled.
