Etymology

The word joins τάγμα ("battalion, ordered unit"), from the verb τάσσω, "to arrange, put in order," with the agent suffix -άρχης, "ruler, commander of," from the verb άρχω, "to rule, to begin." Together they mean the person who commands a τάγμα. The word entered modern Greek military usage as the standard term for the rank of major.
