Etymology

A 20th-century loanword borrowed into Greek from English 'basketball', usually via the clipped form 'basket'. English 'basketball' was coined in 1891 by James Naismith from 'basket' (the original peach baskets used as goals) plus 'ball'. Greek adopted it as an indeclinable neuter noun; alongside it exists the native calque καλαθοσφαίριση (from καλάθι 'basket' + σφαίρα 'ball').
