Νοσοκόμος is a compound of νόσος (disease, illness) and the verb κομέω (to tend, to take care of). Together the parts mean literally one who tends the sick. The word formed in ancient Greek as a two-termination adjective and was later used as a standalone noun for a caregiver in a hospital setting.
