Etymology
From Ancient Greek ὁδός 'way, road, journey', which carried an initial rough breathing later lost in Modern Greek. It is generally traced to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning 'to go, walk', and survives as the productive element -οδος in many compounds. The everyday colloquial word for 'road' (δρόμος) is unrelated.
