Etymology

From Ancient Greek νίκη (níkē) 'victory', personified as Nike, the winged goddess of victory. The word survives unchanged into Modern Greek and is the source of countless personal names such as Νικόλαος ('victory of the people') and the compound φερενίκη ('bringing victory'), behind the name Berenice/Veronica. Its deeper Proto-Indo-European origin is uncertain.
