Etymology
From Ancient Greek αἰών (aiṓn) 'lifetime, age, generation, eternity', which acquired the modern everyday sense 'century'. The word descends from the Proto-Indo-European root denoting vital force and long duration of life, the same root behind Latin aevum and English 'ever'. The Latinized borrowing of αἰών gives English 'eon/aeon'.
