Etymology

Borrowed from Ancient Greek ἐπεισόδιον, originally the part of a tragedy spoken between two choral odes. It is built on εἴσοδος ('entrance, a coming in') plus the prefix ἐπί ('in addition, besides'), so literally 'something brought in besides'. The modern senses 'episode (of a series)' and 'incident' both descend from this notion of a self-contained, inserted part. The international word (English episode, French épisode) is a learned borrowing from this same Greek source.
