Etymology
From Ancient Greek δεῖγμα, a noun built on the verb δείκνυμι (deíknumi, 'to show, point out') with the result-noun suffix -μα, hence literally 'something shown forth'. The verbal root goes back to Proto-Indo-European *deyḱ- 'to show, point out'. The same root underlies a wide family of Greek 'showing' words such as δείκτης and παράδειγμα.
