From Ancient Greek ἐγκέφαλος, originally the adjective in ἐγκέφαλος μυελός ('the marrow within the head'), later substantivized. It is a transparent compound of ἐν ('in') + κεφαλή ('head'), with the nasal assimilating before the velar to give the spelling εγκ-. The κεφαλή element is of debated Indo-European origin.
