Etymology
Derived from Ancient Greek πλοῦτος (ploûtos) 'wealth' with the adjectival suffix -ιος, so the literal sense is 'having wealth, full of wealth'. The further origin of πλοῦτος is debated: it has traditionally been linked to the Proto-Indo-European root *pleh₁- 'to fill' (compare Latin plēnus 'full'), though some scholars (e.g. Beekes) treat it as Pre-Greek and of uncertain origin. The word has been continuously used from Homeric Greek to the present day.
