Etymology
ρολόι derives from Medieval/Byzantine Greek ὡρολόγιον (horológion), 'instrument for telling the hours', a compound of ὥρα 'hour' and the root of λέγω 'to tell, count'. Over time the unstressed initial syllable was lost and the word contracted to the modern ρολόι. The same Ancient Greek elements survive in English 'horology' and, via Latin hora, in 'hour'.
