Etymology
Formed from the verb πατώ ("to tread, step on"), itself from Ancient Greek πατέω, plus the deverbal suffix -ωμα/-μα that derives a noun naming the result of an action. The word therefore literally denotes "the trodden surface" — the part of a room one steps on. The verbal root πατ- is also the source of πάτος ("path, bottom") and μονοπάτι ("trail").
